Mr. Bailey approached students with an idea to better prepare the Community Center for addressing the needs of our town after a natural disaster. When the tornado hit in 2023, the Odell McCallum Community Center (OMCC) provided food, offered a drop-off spot for clothing, and served as a check-in point for a lot of aid that came to our town. Mr. Bailey was unable to provide the amount of help he wished he could to the community, so after talking with some EAST students and discussing ideas, we developed a plan to better prepare the OMCC for future events. Using FloorPlanner, students took measurements of the center and the items we wanted to add to determine how to adapt parts of the center to serve as a shelter, including transforming restrooms into a space for showering and bathing, and turning sections of the gym into sleeping quarters, as well as organizing the vast amounts of donations and converting an old computer lab into a storage room.
