La Guia del Mañana means Guide to Tomorrow. ESOL students Julissa, Emely, and Evelin saw a problem when their parents couldn’t understand the lengthy school handbook. Julissa Bonilla, Emely Chivichon, and Evelin Lopez are EAST students as well, who problem-solved and came up with the idea to help re-create the handbook. They worked with their ESOL Director, Mrs. Cowden, to create a survival guide for parents of ESOL students, empowering them and their children for success. The real-world problem they identified in their Leaders of Tomorrow ESOL class, led them to their EAST project of creating a survival guide for the parents of ESOL students at BHSC. The girls used Nikon cameras, Canva, Adobe Photshop, Google Translate, and email, to take photographs, design maps, communicate with their client and administrators, and create a translated 34-page booklet. With a color coded map of the school, a translated version of the Student Handbook, and easily accessible contact information, this project eased the burden of understanding school rules and procedures for parents whose native language is not English. This project team's work bridged the language and cultural barriers for non-English speaking families. The girls are so excited to put their guide into the hands of very appreciative parents this fall at First Event, our updated and interactive Open House at BHSC.
