At Dewitt High School, administrators email students a Google Doc with daily announcements. However, most do not check their email often enough to read these announcements. So to solve this problem, we decided to film video announcements, and post them on YouTube for students and parents to see. We thought it would be a fun and convenient way to share news around our school. Teachers played the video announcements during the advisory period.
This project is unique because we created fun segments to play each day. Filming the announcements everyday is a job that takes most of the students in our class. First, we chose a different segment for each day. The segments were as follows: Motivational Monday, Sports Tuesday, Weird Facts Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, Fun Friday, Weekly Wins, and birthdays of the day. Before we began filming, we had a few students designated to make logos for each segment on Google drawings. We assigned pairs of students to film each segment, general announcements, edit the videos, and upload them to YouTube.
We filmed these announcements daily for three months. We decided to take a break when we realized we were only getting 10 views per video. After we return from Christmas break, we will restart “Do It Dragons Daily” with a few improvements.Once we restart, we will reevaluate our positions. Some students have moved to other projects, so there will be less students involved. We will only do general announcements and birthdays every day, leaving the special segments for special events only. Whenever we start to lose views, we will email teachers and remind them to play the announcements.
