The National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), located in Jefferson, Arkansas, is a leading research institution dedicated to studying the safety of chemicals, biological agents, and other substances that impact human health. Despite its critical contributions to science and public health, NCTR has faced a significant challenge: attracting scientists to join their team and relocate to Arkansas. This difficulty stems from a lack of awareness about the groundbreaking work being done at NCTR, as well as misconceptions about living and working in our state. Recognizing this, NCTR reached out to our EAST program last Spring for help in creating a comprehensive marketing package to highlight their work, showcase their cutting-edge research environment, and present Arkansas as an appealing destination for scientists.
Our EAST team was tasked with developing professional-quality content that captures the essence of NCTR’s research and collaborative environment. Through interviews, real-time documentation of experiments, and the creation of visually engaging materials, we have worked to tell NCTR’s story in a way that would resonate with scientists considering a move to Arkansas. This has relied heavily on technology, using advanced tools like digital and film cameras, video editing software, and graphic design platforms to produce polished, professional materials that met NCTR’s high standards. This project is designed not only to address NCTR’s immediate recruitment needs but also to provide long-term value as a tool for communicating their mission and opportunities to a global audience. The key contact at NCTR is Kaitlyn Tolleson, who has provided guidance and feedback throughout the process to ensure the content met the marketing department's needs and expectations.
Critical Thinking - The team analyzed NCTR’s recruitment challenges, developed targeted content, and creatively translated technical research into accessible marketing materials.
Advance - The project advanced NCTR’s recruitment efforts with an innovative marketing package and enhanced students’ skills in multimedia, communication, and project management.
Real - The project addressed a genuine need for NCTR, producing tangible products—videos and interviews—for immediate use in recruitment efforts.
Teamwork - Collaboration was key, involving teamwork among students, guidance from NCTR staff, and effective communication to produce high-quality results.
What makes this project unique is its real-world application and the significant impact it will have on NCTR’s ability to attract talent. Our project addressed a genuine need for a respected government agency. By focusing on capturing authentic moments, like experiments in progress and interviews with diverse staff, the project provides a behind-the-scenes look at the groundbreaking work taking place at NCTR. The project also demonstrates the power of cross-disciplinary skills, combining elements of science, communication, and technology. Students were empowered to interact with experts, navigate challenges, and produce a professional-grade product that will help shape perceptions of both NCTR and Arkansas.
The project began this past Spring and has been in progress for several months. It is expected to be completed in the next couple of months. Once finalized, the materials created will serve as a lasting resource for NCTR, supporting their recruitment efforts for years to come.
